Albany & Bremer Bay

The weather continued to be wet today throughout so not much chance even getting out of the car. Left Lake Grace early morning and it was bucketing down. Thought the weather might clear up a bit when I get to Albany. It did for about 30 minutes and I managed to get something from the supermarket and a quick walk up and down the main street. So feeling kind of deflated and thought this should be a sign of ending the W.A. part of the trip. So got in the car and drove towards the border and just stop at wherever I feel like at the time.

Bremer Bay was my side trip. It was a nice seaside holiday town and it seems like a little hidden treasure. I am sure not many people know about this place. It is a rather small town and plenty of holiday houses for sell I saw. The rain seemed to be travelling the direction that I was in. The sun shined briefly for 20-30 minutes and the rain started again. I managed to get a few shots of the birds on the beach. Nothing really excited today at all and looks like the weather is going to be a bit iffy until next week.

Maybe I should put a plastic bag on the camera and a large rubbish bag on me….. just keep taking pictures  🙂

Day 19: Undara to Karumba to Gregory

There were so much wildlife at Undara that couldn’t help myself taking some shots in the morning. Undara was a pleasant unplanned surprise.

Left Undara only knowing that I was heading West so I followed the Savannah Way pretty much all the way. Passed through a couple of towns and there were really not much there in that part of Queensland.  My goal was to get to as close to the border as possible then go south to get on the highway to N.T.

Normanton was where I was heading. Not a bad country town or should I say cowboy. There were many ‘Rodeo’ signs around town.

Karumba, another nice surprise. Nice town just on the Gulf of Carpentaria. First thing I noticed here was the forever changing clouds in the sky as I am a self-acclaimed ‘Cloud Chaser’. Then I found out this is where you can see the ‘Morning Glory’ phenomenon just before the wet season begins. For those of you don’t know what M.G. is; it is a cloud formation can only be seen on the Gulf of Carpentaria and Gulf of New Mexico. (Google it if you want to know more 🙂 ) …. It is rather ironic to think that I like clouds and my work is around cloud as well.

Anyway, spent a few hours there in Karumba and had a couple of sandwiches in the picnic area… fed the birds that were hanging around… It was time to move on.

Basically, just drove until I was tired then stop on the side somewhere overnight. And the little town I stopped and slept in was…. Gregory. It was the closest that I can get to Gregory for a while.

Day 11: Cairns to Cooktown

Never thought I would say this but I love 4-wheel driving! So there.

It took me 9 hours today to get from Cairns to here, Cooktown. I did stop at many places and look around. Port Douglas is too ‘resort-ish’ for my liking but it is a nice holiday destination, I must say. Then, stopped at Mossman, pretty much the last stop before going off-road so I topped up the tank.

Next, I headed to Daintree Ferry to cross the river; then went to Daintree Rainforest Discovery Centre for a side trip. It was almost all off-road driving after Daintree. Crossed many little creeks and rivers. Some of the hills are so steep that I swear our ‘dog’ van would not made some of them. It was so much fun and scary at the same time.

Haven’t have much chance to take any pictures today but did take some that I really like. Like the one today 🙂

Day 6: Brisbane, Beerwah & Maryborough

Woken up by the sound of breaking waves and it was dark still. It was time to continue the journey. A destination was needed. Brisbane? No… wanted to cover a bit more distance today. Hervey Bay was one of the choice but then I didn’t want another “beach-y” destination. That’s how Maryborough came to be. Bit more inland, mountains and forest for a change.

Stopped over at Brisbane and drove around for an hour or so as nothing really opened yet at 8 in the morning. It was time to move on and decided to do a detour when I saw the “Tourist Drive” sign to Glass House Mountain. The name grabbed me for some reasons. It was kilometres after kilometres of parkland. An unexpected visit to Australia Zoo about 50 minutes into the detour. Still hard to believe that Steve Irwin was killed almost 6 years ago. Hope the zoo can get going on…

Finally arrived today’s destination, Maryborough, just before 2pm. Staying in a motel here after sleeping in the cars for 2 nights. Checked in, made a chicken and avocado sandwich, cleaned myself up and now writing this. Think will have an early night tonight.
